Real-World Fitness: Can You Pass the “Life Test”?

Because Strength Shouldn’t Just Exist in the Gym

Let’s play a game.

Forget bench presses and treadmill sprints for a second—because today, we’re testing something far more important…

Your Real-World Fitness.

At Real Good Fitness, we believe strength isn’t just about lifting the heaviest weights or running the fastest mile. It’s about being ready for anything life throws at you. Whether picking up your shopping, climbing the stairs without gasping for breath, or winning the inevitable Christmas cracker pull battle (because that’s functional fitness, too).

So, let’s see how you score on the Life Test™ (totally made up, but trust us—it’s important).

Level 1: The Shopping Bag Gauntlet

Scenario: You’ve just done a big food shop. Your car is across the car park. Do you:

A.      Split the bags into two trips like a sensible person.

B.      Try to carry every single bag in one go, cutting off circulation to your hands.

C.     Struggle halfway, drop a bag, and watch helplessly as your apples roll under the nearest parked car.

If you answered B, congratulations! You’ve got grip strength and determination—though we recommend some farmer’s carries to avoid future finger amputation risk.

Level 2: The Bottom Shelf Squat

Scenario: You’re in the supermarket. You spot your favourite bottle of wine—but it’s on the bottom shelf. Do you:

A.      Bend from your back like a folding deck chair and hope for the best.

B.      Perform a perfect squat, easily pick it up, and stand back up without effort.

C.     Attempt a squat but lose balance and accidentally remove the entire Prosecco display.

If you answered B, you win at life (and squats). If you answered A… your lower back may be plotting against you.

(And yes, this was inspired by a real client success story—because sometimes fitness wins come from picking up wine effortlessly).

Level 3: The Stairs Speed Test

Scenario: The lift is broken. You need to walk up three flights of stairs. Do you:

A.      Bound up them two at a time like a superhero.

B.      Make it to the top, but pretend to check your phone so no one notices your heavy breathing.

C.     Consider living on the ground floor from now on.

If stairs feel like Everest, you might need more cardio endurance and leg strength in your training. (Don’t worry; hill sprints aren’t as scary as they sound. Maybe.)

Level 4: The Floor Recovery Mission

Scenario: You’ve sat down on the floor. Maybe you were playing with your kids, maybe you just fancied a change of scenery. Now, you need to stand back up. Do you:

A.      Hop up effortlessly like an athlete in slow motion.

B.      Take a second, push off your knee, but get there.

C.     Look around for furniture to help you up like a tactical genius.

If you struggle with getting up off the floor, don’t worry—you’re not alone. However, mobility, balance, and core strength are key to staying independent and active for years.

Final Score: How Did You Do?

All Bs? You’re already moving like a champ! Keep up the great work.

A mix of Bs & Cs? You’re doing well, but let’s fine-tune that movement and build more strength.

More As than Bs? It’s time to train smarter—because life’s daily challenges should be easy, not exhausting!
